The Wudang Mountains in Hubei Province, China, has well preserved palaces and temples dating back to the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The mountains are a treasured site of Chinese art and architecture spanning over one thousand years.

The Ancient Building Complex in the Wudang Mountains of China was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site during the 18 session of the World Heritage Committee in Phuket, Thailand, on 12-17 December, 1994.

Wudang Mountains, also called Wudangshan, has been a well-known site for Taoist monasteries. The Taoist religious buildings at Wudang Mountains date back as early as the 7th century. It was a Taoist academic centre for research, training and the practise of meditation.

In 1417, the Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty order the construction of the Hall of Yuzhen for Zhang Sanfeng, a Chinese Taoist priest who is credited with founding the Chinese martial arts of Wudangquan and Taijiquan.

Wudang Mountains was the venue of the third biannual Traditional Wushu Festival held from 28 October to 2 November, 2008.

Wudang is located 350 km (250 miles) to the northwest of Wuhan. You can fly to Wuhan from Beijing or Shanghai, and then take a train from Wuhan to Wudang. Get a local travel agency to help you with the arrangement.
