Criterias reflecting Outstanding Universal Values that properties are nominated for inscrpiton as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites are properties around the world recognized by UNESCO for exhibiting outstanding universal value to mankind.

UNESCO maintains a World Heritage List in which sites of outstanding cultural, natural or mixed cultural-and-natural significance are inscribed. The World Heritage programme was established in 1972 during the UNESCO Genera Conference, where the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted.

In 1978, the first batch of sites were inscribed into the World Heritage List, and new sites were added to the list every year since then. As of 2008, 878 sites have been listed as World Heritage Sites. These include 678 cultural, 174 natural, and 26 mixed sites, located in 145 countries. Sites are inscribed during the Ordinary Sessions of the World Heritage Committee, which meet once a year, either in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, or in a host city of the Committee Member country.

The World Heritage Committee is a body comprising 21 representatives from the States Parties that have ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, agreeing to abide by the rules set out by UNESCO with regards the protection of heritage sites within their respective boundaries. Properties that are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site has to meet at least one of the ten World Heritage Site Inscription Criteria which is set out by the Convention. The inscription criteria determines whether the property falls under the cultural, natural or mixed category.

The majority of UNESCO World Heritage Sites are cultural sites, and geographically, they are located in Europe. This is not to say that places outside Europe lack merit. It is something that UNESCO itself, through the World Heritage Committee, acknowledged, as far back as 1984. They then came up with the Global Strategy for World Heritage Listing, in the attempt to counteract the off balance.

Today it is much harder for a site to be listed that it was in the "early days". Back then, countries can get many sites inscribed within the same year. Now there's a cap of not more than one site per country per year. On the other hand, most of the "big boys", from the Taj Mahal to the Pyramids, are already on the List. What follows now are sites which you really need to scrutinize to understand why it too is joining the party.

Just because a site is famous doesn't mean you will automatically find it listed. Some countries, Myanmar for example, doesn't even have a single site listed. That does not mean that sites in Myanmar *, such as Bagan for example, are not worthy. The thing is, for a site to get on the list as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the government of that country need to put it on the Tentative List. This includes coming up with a plan to show UNESCO how the site will be managed and protected.

Entering the World Heritage List is the most prestigious recognition any site can attain, and countries around the world work hard in getting their outstanding heritage sites inscribed on that list. Listing not only brings worldwide exposure, it also generates income in the form of tourist dollars.

On the other hand, the inscription of sites often bring along detrimental and degenerative effects. For that reason, UNESCO is very cautious to ensure that each new site has a master plan about how it intends to control tourism and its effects, before inscribing it on the World Heritage list.

The UNESCO World Heritage Sites is part of the list of outstanding sites which I have documented in World Greatest Sites. Of course, each site recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site is immediately also a World Greatest Site. On this page are all the World Heritage Sites inscribed by UNESCO listed by country in alphabetical order. ( * Myanmar became a State Party to the World Heritage Convention in 1994. In 1996 it submitted 8 sites to the Tentative List, but none so far have been inscribed. )

I hope you enjoy my documentation of the properties inscribed by the World Heritage Committee as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As you can understand, there are hundreds of these properties, so it takes a while for me to document each and every one of them. To follow me as I complete and put on the web new sites, please sign up to my World Greatest Sites on Twitter account.
