 Srebana Nature Reserve, Bulgaria Author: Svik (Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0) Srebarna Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in northwestern Bulgaria. It is located 18 km to the west of Silistra, and 2 km to the south of the Danube river, near the village of Srebarna. Within Srebarna Nature Reserve is Lake Srebarna, an important wildfowl migration route between Europe and Africa. Srebarna Nature Reserve was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site during the 7th session of the World Heritage Committee in Florence, Italy, on 5-9 December, 1983. It is recognised for its importance as a migratory bird sanctuary. Some 80 species use it as a refuge in winter. Among the birds that can be seen at Srebarna Nature Reserve include the Dalmatian pelican, the great egret, the Marsh-harrier, the night heron, the purple heron, the Greylag Goose, the Bluethroat, the glossy ibis, the cormorants, the Mute Swans, and the white spoonbill.In addition to the bird species, the nature reserve is also home to 39 species of mammals, 21 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 10 species of fish.
