Oriental Pearl Tower is a telecommunication tower in Pudong district, Shanghai, China. It is located in Lujiazui, the neighborhood of Pudong on the bend of the Huangpu River. Oriental Pearl Tower was designed by Shanghai architect Jiang Huan Cheng. Construction began in 1991, and the tower was completed in 1995. It is 468 meters (1,535 feet) high. It was the tallest structure in China until the completion of the Shanghai World Financial Center. The design of the Oriental Pearl Tower includes eleven spheres of various sizes. The two biggest are located along the length of the tower. The upper sphere is 50 meters (164 feet) in diameter while the lower sphere is 45 meters (148 feet) in diameter. The lower sphere is linked to three columns, each with a diameter of 9 meters (30 feet). There are fifteen observatory levels at the Oriental Pearl Tower. The highest, at 350 meters (1,148 feet) above ground is called the Space Module. At 263 meters (863 feet) is the Sightseeing Floor, and at 90 meters (295 feet), the Space City. There is also a revolving restaurant at the 267 meter (876 feet) height. In addition, the Oriental Pearl Tower also manage to pack a 20-room hotel in between the two large spheres. The chief of the jury board that chose the design of the Oriental Pearl Tower said the design reminded him of a verse from the Tang Dynasty poem, Pipa Song, by Bai Juyi, which recalls the refreshing sound of springking water falling like pearls on a jade plate. The designer, Jiang Huancheng, however was not aware of the poem when he designed the tower. Visiting Oriental Pearl TowerTake Line 2 of the Shanghai Metro to the Lujiazui subway station.
