Italy ratified the World Heritage Convention on 23 June, 1978. As of May 2010, it has 44 World Heritage Sites, more than any other country in the world. 42 of these properties are in the cultural category while two are in the natural category. Italy also has another 41 sites on the World Heritage Tentative List.
