Valparaíso is a seaport city in Chile. It is regarded as an outstanding showcase of 19th century urban and architectural development in Latin America. Valparaíso was built within an amphitheatre-like basin surrounded by hills that are now dotted with church spires. Valparaíso has nicely preserved the infrastructure that dates back to its early industrial period. In 2003, the historic quarter of Valparaíso was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, during the 27th session of the World Heritage Committee which met in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, from 30 June to 5 July of that year. The core zone of the heritage site covers an area of 23.2 hectares, surrounded by a buffer zone of 44.5 hectares.
