 Guanacaste Conservation Area, Costa Rica Author: Tizianok (Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported) The Area de Conservación Guanacaste is a conservation area in Costa Rica. This forested land is rich in biological diversity. It is one of the best examples of a dry forest habitat between Central America and Mexico. The Guanacaste Conservation Area was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site during the 23rd session of the World Heritage Committee which met in Marrakesh, Morocco, from 29 November to 4 December, 1999. In 2004, the area of conservation was expanded to cover an additional 15,000 hectares of a private property known as St. Elena.
