The Franciscan Church (Franziskanerkirche) is a Roman Catholic church in Salzburg's World Heritage Site. The church stands out against the surrounding Baroque architecture, in that it is in Romanesque style with a dash of Gothic. The church tower on the southern side was erected between 1468 and 1498. It was done by a Nuremberg master builder, and spots a distictly Frankish Gothic style. In 1670, its Gothic spire was removed at the orders of Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg, as it made the Franciscan Church taller than the Salzburg Cathedral. Its Neo-Gothic helm roof dates to 1867. The Franciscan Church has a Baroque altarpiece with a fabulous sculpture of the Madonna and Child. This was the work of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach.
