 Museu Nacional Honestino Guimarães Author: ACrush (Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0) Brasília, the capital of Brazil, was a city created from scratch in 1956 by urban planner Lucio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer. The layout of the whole city, from the residential and administrative districts to the symmetry of the buildings was planned to harmonise with the city's overall design, and to be both innovative and imaginative. Brasília was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site during the 11th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, on 7-11 December, 1987.
