The Atlantic Forest South-East Reserves are the best examples of Atlantic forest in Brazil. Covering a total area of 470,000 hectares, the reserves are contained in 25 protected areas. Much of it is on the Serra do Mar, a 1500-km long mountain range on the southeastern part of Brazil. They are the last remaining Atlantic forests and include densely forested mountains, gradually descending to wetlands and coastal islands, where there are isolated mountains and dunes. The Atlantic Forest South-East Reserves were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Discovery Coast Atlantic Forest Reserves, during the 23rd session of the World Heritage Committee in Marrakesh, Morocco, from 29 November to 4 December, 1999.
