Alesund, picturesque Norwegian fishing portÅlesund is a small fishing port in Norway. Located in the Sunnmøre area in the northern part of Norway's fjord area, Ålesund sits on islands connected by bridges. Ålesund is blessed with picturesque sceneries along its quay area where one can see fish being landed and ferry boats coming and going. Most of the houses in Ålesund dates only from 1904. A big fire in that year destroyed most of the older houses. Ironically the only casualty of the fire was the occupant of the local fire station. Since then, the town has been rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style. Indeed Ålesund has the most complete coherent art nouveau construction in the world. The view from the top of Aksla Mountain is particularly spectacular. The climb to the top - all 418 steps - may be quite demanding. However visitors who manage to reach the top can reward themselves with a beverage at the restaurant up there. At the base of Aksla Mountain is a park with the statue of Gange Rolf, a local hero who was the ancestor of William the Conqueror. Skjerdingen Mountain also offers spectacular view from the top. Among the tourist sights in Ålesund includes its aquarium, which faces the sea and is built into the natural coastline. Visitors interested in the art nouveau movement should visit the Jugendstil Senteret or Art Nouveau Centre of Norway. Ålesund is the base for exploring the Sunnmøre area, which has many picturesque fjords, islands, mountains and fishing villages. The Sunnmøre Museum displays medieval buildings, boats and artefacts. Getting thereÅlesund's Vigra Airport is served by SAS (Scandinavian Airlines).Weather in AlesundClimate of ÅlesundNovember to February are the coldest months in Ålesund.
