Ajanta Caves are caves in India with ancient Buddhist monuments. Located in the state of Maharashtra, the Ajanta Caves comprises some 28 to 30 cave monuments that were created between the second to the first century BC. Later on, during the Gupta period, between the 5th to the 6th centuries, many more richly embellished caves were added to the older ones.

The paintings and sculptures of Ajanta Caves are regarded as some of the best examples of Buddhist religious art, and are said to have a great artistic influence on later works.

Ajanta Caves was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site during the 7th session of the World Heritage Committee in Florence, Italy, on 5-9 December, 1983.
