Aalborg, Old Danish City on the LimfjordAalborg is a city on the Limfjord in Denmark. It has a population of 122,000 (2006). Aalborg is the site of two ancient settlements. There is also a Viking burial ground in Aalborg. Aalborg's history goes back to the Middle Ages, when it was a harbor and trading centre. The Old Town is particularly picturesque with narrow cobbled streets and medieval houses. Among the tourist attractions in Aalborg includes Aalborghus Castle and Jens Bang's house. Another attraction is the well-preserved merchant's house belonging to Jens Bang's half-brother Jørgen Olufsen. Budolfi Cathedral is another attraction dating from the 18th century and earlier. The excavation conducted on the 11th century Franciscan Friary has been preserved as a museum, located beneath the main shopping street. An interesting fact about Aalborg is that akvavit, the fiery Scandinavian spirit, is distilled there.Aalborg offers quality shopping to visitors. There is an interesting variety of shops to be found in this city. When one has had enough of shopping, stop for coffee and relax at Jomfru Ane Garde (Virgin Anne Street). In the evening Jomfru Ane Garde is noted for its nightlife. Visitors keen to appreciate Aalborg's culture should visit the North Jutland Museum, housed in a modern structure designed by renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Head to the Historical Museum to appreciate the history of the city and to the 17th century House of Crafts to admire some of the traditional crafts. Other sights include the windmill at Vester Mariendel, Rosdahl's Saturday food market and Aalborgtårnet tripod tower, which is 105 m (345 ft) above sea level.
