The 34th session of the World Heritage Committee is presently meeting in Brasilia, Brazil. The session was officially opened by Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, and João Luiz da Silva Ferreira, the Minister of Culture, Brazil. During this session of the Committee, 39 properties in 33 countries are being considered for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Three of these countries, Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Tajikistan, have no properties inscribed to date. During her opening address, Irina Bokova stressed that properties are testing grounds for new and innovative protective measures that involve the surrounding communities. She said that the properties should be regarded as laboratories of sustainable development in practice. The World Heritage Committee will also be reviewing the state of conservation involving 147 World Heritage properties. These include 31 sites that are on the List of World Heritage in Danger and another 36 that are causing serious concern. To date, the World Heritage List includes 890 properties of "outstanding universal value". They include 689 cultural, 176 natural and 25 mixed properties in 148 countries. The properties that have been submitted for consideration into the World Heritage List in 2010 are as follows: Natural Properties
